At the much-heralded opening of her husband's new exhibition, Hester Eliot realises she is shockingly disillusioned with Robert's work. And, physically exhausted after a miscarriage, she has begun to question her talent as a painter. When a friend offers Hester the use of her cottage in the little estuary town of coombe Ferrers in the West Country, Hester hopes it will give her the opportunity to disperse the dark clouds she has been holding at bay; the chance to mourn her mother, who died before her time, and the child, who never had a time. In doing so, Hester will recover her freedom. Paperback Ed 1994
