The irony was that Hilary only told Sam about her affair on a sudden whim. Nevertheless, it damned their marriage. Years later, however, Sam Lilley believes it has all worked out in its way; Hilary is remarried, their daughter Annabel is enjoying her job at a London advertising advertising agency, and he has settled into an easy routine with his mistress, Hazel, and at work in his firm Lilley & Chase, one of London's more congenial, if chaotic, publishing houses. The Reverend Christopher Howard is a retired Principal from a religious community in Norfolk, now affiliated to the fashionable Chelsea church of St Barnabas. Like Sam, he has faced a crisis prompted by love - in his case a homosexual scandal, amidst intense media attention, which forced his resignation from the community he had led for many years. He has remained with his young lover Mark Ryder, but finds himself painfully estranged from his former life. Sam and Christopher have found ways of coping with their new lives, as have Hilary and Mark, but the past still holds them, the pain cannot be lessened without forgiveness. And sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring about understanding. Hardback Ed with Dust Jacket 1994
