Whether it is a travel book or merely, a book about America, it all adds up to an a astringent, highly individual, but by no means unsympathetic account of a journey made by a seemingly indefatigable traveller with an observant eye and patient ear. Hardback ed with dust jacket, 1967 first Ed- Tavel book club ed.

The Author insists that this is not a travel book about America but the story of a journey and that there is a difference. It was "America the hard way" - tourist class by slow boat to New York, then across the States, New York to Los Angeles, by bus, and endurance test of three consecutive days and nights with a repeat performance from San Francisco back to New York. Miss Mannin crossed twenty states, consumed a great many hot-dogs, hamburgers and cokes, and had a great many conversations. Hardback Ed with dust jacket 1967 first edition.
