Often dubbed the warm inland equivalent of Pinot Noir, Grenache was once one of the main varieties planted in the Riverland of Australia, making large volumes of fortified wine but now makes up as little as 1% of planted area. Riverland Grenache has been somewhat overlooked in the past but is making a big come back based on the medium bodied, comtemporary styles of wine possible, and many end uses with a variety that's well suited to be grown in a warm and sunny climate.
