Amanda BridgeShop Local SA was invited to attend and present at the SA Small Business Friendly Council Annual Workshop for 2021.

The event was held by the Office of the Small Business Commissioner and hosted by Acting Small Business Commissioner Nerissa Kilvert on 26 October 2021 at the U City Function Centre in Adelaide. It attracted attendees from Councils across South Australia and other stakeholders.

To participate in the Small Business Friendly Council (SBFC) Initiative, Councils are asked to sign a SBFC Charter Agreement which sets out five required initiatives and more initiatives designed to support small business in their local government area.

The five required initiatives are:

  1. Implementing activities to improve the operating environment for small business within Council’s area.
  2. Establishing a business advisory group to assist Council’s understanding of small business in its area;
  3. Implementing a procurement policy which recognises and supports local small businesses wherever possible.
  4. Paying undisputed invoices from small businesses within 30 days.
  5. Implementing a timely and cost effective dispute resolution process to manage disputes.

Amanda Bridge, Sales & Stakeholder Manager from Shop Local SA (pictured), made a presentation in which she outlined current online shopping trends in Australia and the important role of marketplaces in the eCommerce landscape.

Amanda also explained how Shop Local SA is designed to help consumers in South Australia's towns and regions shop from local small businesses. Shop Local SA makes it easy to browse for vendors in a specific area, or find specific products by searching or by browsing categories.

Councils who are part of the SBFC initiative are required to identify and implement additional initiatives every year, and Amanda explained that is where Shop Local SA's Partnerships Program can come into play. We help councils who want to get more of their small businesses trading online by creating subsidised on-boarding offers for small businesses.

There was also a presentation by David West from Mainstreet SA and Premier Retail Marketing who presented useful insights into the value of mainstreet shopping precincts and how better shopping experiences can be created.

We also heard about local success stories and initiatives from Daniel Adams and Emma Grivell from City of Prospect, Selma Barlow from City of Charles Sturt, and Marnie Lock from City of Holdfast Bay.

Andrew White from Maras Group talked about how Rundle Street East has developed into a unique destination for South Australians.

Email Shop Local SA or call 0422 907 467=""> if you are from an SBFC council and would like to discuss partnering with us, or if you are a small business in South Australia we can let you know what programs may be available to support you to get up and running on South Australia's leading online marketplace.

While the metropolitan Adelaide is where most South Australian's live and work, about a quarter of South Australia's population lives in regions outside of Adelaide. South Australia's rural regions are an integral part of our state's community and economy and offer some amazing experiences for locals and visitors alike.

On Shop Local SA you can shop with vendors across the state and enjoy the multi-vendor checkout with shipping direct to your door. Many vendors also offer the convenience of click-and-collect.

To encourage consumers to shop in their local community we have divided up our vendors according to the 12 South Australian regions in which they operate. Some operate in more than one region.

At Shop Local SA we’re committed to working with small and medium-sized businesses, local councils and business groups to assist communities to not just survive, but thrive!
